Local Recreation

Base Camp La Grande, Oregon is a perfect location for an outdoor enthusiast to launch from. Within a two hour drive in any direction, the recreation opportunities are endless and the crowds are non-existent.

Mt. Emily Recreation Area (MERA) is located just two miles north of La Grande and offers a wide variety of forest recreation opportunities, including a world class archery range. MERA has 45 miles of motorized and 45 miles of non-motorized trails covering 3,669 acres. Enjoy trails dedicated for ATV and ORV use, or use pedal power for mountain bike trails. Horseback riders, hikers, snowshoers and cross-country skiers can also enjoy marked trails, offering both gentle routes and challenging terrain. Whatever your mode of transportation, the views of the Grande Ronde Valley and the Eagle Cap Wilderness from the flanks of Mount Emily are breathtaking.

MERA is open year ‘round for hiking, trail running, mountain biking, and equestrian use. Wildflowers are typically in full bloom from April to June. Deer, elk, black bears, and many species of birds and other wildlife inhabit MERA year ‘round. Generally, trails are snow-free from March through November. In the winter months, backcountry skiing and snowshoeing is popular in the mid- to high-elevations. Ski routes range from low angled climbs and descents along double track roads and open areas to very steep black diamond runs through glades and natural openings.

With nearly 12 miles of single track, non-motorized trails, mountain cyclists, trail runners, hikers, and equestrians enjoy challenging terrain. Another 12 miles of double track trails, which are typically unimproved roads that are closed to motorized travel, are also available.
